Gift Aid

Everything you need to know about Gift Aid

What is Gift Aid?

Increase the value of your donation by 25% at no extra cost

Gift Aid allows Surrey Wildlife Trust to reclaim from the Government the tax that you have already paid on your membership subscriptions and donations. This means that every pound you donate could be worth an extra 25p to us, and it doesn’t cost you a penny.

Money raised from this scheme makes your donation go further and enables us to do even more vital work to restore, connect and protect Surrey’s habitats.

Make a Gift Aid declaration

You can do this by ticking the Gift Aid box when you donate or join, or you can complete a declaration below:

Gift Aid FAQ

Am I eligible to donate through Gift Aid?

To be eligible you must be a UK taxpayer, paying tax on your income or capital gains. Your donations will qualify as long as they’re not more than 4 times what you have paid in tax in that tax year (6 April to 5 April.)

You need to pay enough UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax in each tax year to cover the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations to charity, otherwise it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

How do I add Gift Aid to my donations?

You’ll need to make a Gift Aid declaration. We need your address to identify you as a current UK taxpayer.

You can make a Gift Aid declaration when you donate or join online, by completing our online Gift Aid declarationdownloading our printable Gift Aid declaration, or by requesting a form from our Membership team.

If you download a form, please complete and return to:

You can cancel or amend your Gift Aid declaration at any time by contacting our Membership team.

Do I have to fill in a new declaration every year?

No, you just need to fill out a Gift Aid declaration form with your full name, address and the date you are making the declaration. The declaration will remain active until you tell us to cancel it. You must however let us know if you stop being a taxpayer, no longer pay enough tax, or change your name or address.

Who can make a Gift Aid declaration for my membership payments?

Individual memberships

If you’re the named payer for your own individual membership then you can make a Gift Aid declaration for that membership.

Joint memberships

If paying from a single account, then the named payer must make the Gift Aid declaration.
If paying from a joint account in the same names as the membership, then either member can make the Gift Aid declaration.

What about gift memberships?

Sorry, we cannot claim Gift Aid on gift memberships.

I’m a higher rate taxpayer

You can claim back the difference between the tax you’ve paid on the donation and the amount claimed back by Surrey Wildlife Trust when you fill in your Self Assessment tax return.

I am a pensioner, do my donations qualify?

You may still be paying tax on a private pension plan or savings account, or capital gains tax if you sell either property or shares. As long as you have paid enough tax during the year to cover the amount we are reclaiming on your donations you are still eligible to donate through Gift Aid.

I made a Gift Aid declaration in the past but now no longer pay tax

You must let us know so we can close your Gift Aid declaration.
