Chitty’s Common is hidden away on the North West side of Guildford, unknown to the general public and most volunteers. It is a green oasis in a suburban development and a wildlife magnet whose importance is far greater than its apparent size, it is also part of the Worplesdon group of commons.
The Friends of Chitty’s Common was formed just over 1 year ago, and with the help of our volunteers and tools and equipment from SWT we have started to make inroads into a very overgrown meadow area.
Last September and October we gave ourselves the task of working on a dried-up pond. This was dug out and is now starting to take shape, with logs placed along some of the edges to attract and hide small wildlife. Even whilst working, dragonflies were looking to see if they had a new home to lay their eggs. Our hard work has paid off, we now have frogs jumping and a mass of frog spawn.
All the work we have achieved so far, could not have been done without the dedication and enthusiasm of all the volunteers that have come out over the past year to our Sunday Work Parties, so a Very Big Thank You. If you would like to find out more, see the weekly up-dates from SWT or contact volunteers@surreywt.org.uk.
