Give your kids an immersive experience in August with a four day wild adventure in the woods with Surrey Wildlife Trust.
Exploring the wonderful woodland habitats of our private nature reserve, children will play games while learning how to communicate over long distances, have fun building shelters and try cooking over an open fire.
Playing treasure hunt style games children will learn how to explore the woods using orienteering skills. Kids can delve deep into the pond, sweep through the grass, shake the trees and lift the logs looking for the different types of creatures that live in the woods. There may even be a chance to set some small mammal traps to try to catch live mice or voles.
Based at the award winning Nower Wood education centre, near Leatherhead, the adventure week will focus around learning through play. Every day the kids will have some free time for fun and games with their new friends in the forest school area or for creating woodland inspired art projects.
Charlotte Magowan, marketing and communications manager at Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: ‘Here at the Surrey Wildlife Trust we just love to have fun in the woods getting up close to nature and wildlife. It is these summer holiday Gerald Durrell moments that create wonderful happy memories from childhood and inspire kids to have a lifelong passion for nature.’
To round off the week, young explorers will travel through time into the history of the wood meeting characters, hearing stories and getting stuck in with games and challenges. There will be time to get messy making cave paintings, becoming a Roman potter for the day and playing with clay.
The Wild Explorers holiday club runs the first three weeks in August at the Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve on Mill Way, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 8QA from 9.30am to 4pm from Monday to Thursday each week.
Or if your children are happier in water than the woods, they could try the Undersea Explorers adventure at Fox Hills Club and resort to celebrate The Wildlife Trusts National Marine Week. On Friday 3rd August from 1pm to 2.30pm kids can dive into the swimming pool and discover the wonderful wildlife living in our oceans around the UK. Children must be able to swim 25 metres.
