Nature Discovery Day – School Visits

Spend an inspiring discovery day at Nower Wood Nature Reserve, where you will delve into ancient woodland to make learning come to life. You can choose three hands on curriculum-linked sessions to provide children with a wonderful introduction to life in the woodland, guided by our trained volunteers.

Explore the available sessions using the buttons above. Choose three sessions from the following: Minibeast Hunting, Pond Dipping, Sensory Habitat Walk (Early Years & Key Stage 1), and Trees and Plants (Key Stages 1 & 2).  Please note that our Trees and Plants session is available between mid-April to November only.

Who are the sessions for?

  • Suitable for Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 groups, the day consists of 3 sessions that last 50 minutes each.
  • These sessions are designed for up to 30 children at a time, split into 2 smaller groups.
  • If you are bringing 60 or 90 children, the groups will swap over to each try all 3 experiences.  If bringing more than 60 Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 children, you must choose Pond Dipping as one of your 3 sessions.
  • You will have exclusive access to one of our classrooms, per 30 children, for the duration of your visit. Each room includes an interactive smart screen and double doors which open directly onto the reserve.

What to expect

Our experienced and knowledgeable volunteers will guide your sessions and provide all the equipment and worksheets you need - you just need to turn up ready for a day of exploration! These sessions are a great way to see a variety of habitats and wildlife and are suitable for all ages and abilities.

In line with school trip recommendations, during visits you will need to provide a ratio of 1 adult for every 6 children for health and safety reasons. For a class of 30 children, 5 adults will be required to attend.

The sessions available are:

  • Minibeast Hunting
  • Pond Dipping
  • Sensory Habitat Walk (Early Years & Key Stage 1)
  • Trees and Plants, available between mid-April to November (Key Stages 1 & 2)
