Surrey County Cricket Club (SCCC), situated in the heart of Kennington at the world-famous cricket ground, The Kia Oval, with a second ground in Guildford, has partnered with Surrey Wildlife Trust to help support the Trust’s vital mission to protect and support local wildlife. This partnership is a significant step towards integrating environmental stewardship into the world of sports.
As a gold corporate member of the Trust, SCCC will leverage its platform to raise awareness among cricket fans and club members about the importance of protecting local wildlife. They will also promote SWT’s initiatives and the broader message of environmental conservation.
Additionally, SWT will provide SCCC with advice and support to enhance the natural habitats within and around their cricket grounds. This will include helping to create wildlife-friendly spaces, such as planting native species and maintaining green areas.
Steve Elworthy, Chief Executive at Surrey CCC, said:
“We are looking forward to partnering with Surrey Wildlife Trust to support their important work of protecting and preserving local wildlife in our county.
“At Surrey, we highly value looking after our surroundings and understand that biodiversity protection and restoration, which is one of the missions of Surrey Wildlife Trust, is a key element in combatting the climate crisis.”
Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Chief Executive, Sarah Jane Chimbwandira said:
“Nothing could be more English than a game of cricket – and it’s great that SCCC is working to protect another vital part of our national heritage: our wildlife and wild places. With one-third of Surrey species in trouble, the birdsong and natural beauty that accompanies every outdoor game is under threat of vanishing for good – but thanks to partnerships like this one, we won’t let that happen. Surrey Wildlife Trust has a clear plan to restore the abundance of life that makes our wonderful county special, and we invite more businesses and local people join us. It’s in everyone’s interests to stand up for nature.”
